Shaun Viljoen

It was about seven years ago that I first took a camera out of
auto mode and decided to try to learn how to take photographs
that were more than just family or holiday snapshots.
It began with birds, insects, the ocean and landscapes – all
shot in and around my hometown of Torquay. But as I
wandered around, I found myself increasingly drawn to
unplanned moments – the people, places and interactions that
I’d stumble across on my walks. At the time I knew nothing of
street photography, but in hindsight, I realise the opportunism
and observation that was starting to inform my images was
very much a street photography approach.
When the pandemic – and subsequent lockdowns hit – I
started learning more about street and documentary
photography and the work of renowned artists like Harry
Gruyaert, Alex Webb, Joel Meyerowitz and Vivian Maier.
Unable to travel or visit friends and family, I bought myself a
small, discreet camera and set out to capture just some of the
many stories of this town. And I haven’t really stopped.

It’s been a very rewarding experience – therapeutic during a
challenging few years. Street photography is very much about
being present, about noticing and it’s taught me to appreciate
the richness and many layers of the world around us. There
are stories – big and small – to be told on every block and
setting out with no idea what the town or the light will serve up
is always exciting.
